Keep in mind that if you develop an app that violate the Facebook Terms of Service or create a group that spread false rumors, that app/group will be blocked by Facebook.

Most recently, Facebook has blocked few groups / apps, even though the group / app is not a standard money mule scam.

1) The original group of I WONT LET FACEBOOK CHARGE ME £4.99 A MONTH FROM JULY 1ST 2010

Visiting the URL of the aforesaid Facebook group, i.e. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=387113115536&ref=nf, it will be redirected back to Facebook home page. Without any doubt, it was blocked.

However, in reality, there is no such plan to be initiated by Facebook pertaining to the monthly charge. But you wonder there are still some users who believed Facebook is going to do it. Check this new group I WONT LET FACEBOOK CHARGE ME £14.99 A MONTH FROM JULY 1ST 2010, there are more than 8,000 users that joined the group. Additionally, searching for “Facebook charges July 2010″ on search engines lead to some fake blog entries as well.

2) Defriended, an Apple’s app that tells you who have defriended you has also been blocked by Facebook, according to a tweet posted recently. Well, this app helps users to track the defrienders by scanning the Facebook friends list each time he/she opens up the Facebook account seemed to be violated the Facebook terms as well.

Last month, news came out of Hong Kong that the Hong Kong police are hunting the creator of Facebook group whom encouraging teenagers to commit suicide. The Facebook group entitled “I want to practise suicide” even called on its 190 members to kill themselves on this December 21.

Of course, those suicide-prone kind of Facebook groups have been removed by Facebook and luckily, there aren’t any teenager who commit suicide attributed to the cause of joining the aforesaid “I want to practise suicide” group, according to the news.

Today, ironically, typing the word “自殺”, i.e. suicide still returns a range of nearly 500 Facebook groups which either supports the act of commit suicide or anti the practising of suicide, all fall under the Chinese group name. The problem now is, there is far too easy to create a new Facebook group, invite few friends and then start a topic discussion. And the worst, people nowadays want to go into the virtual world in order to deal with their emotional problems, you doubt they will talk to the real people when they have emotional problems in the “real” world, and eventually, they received the commit suicide advices.

To show the number-wise of those suicide-prone Facebook groups still around us, here are few of them.

This group entitled, “Practise Suicide, Good for Health”; A funny theme, existed while I capture its picture few days ago, but it is not available in the search database today.

As I mentioned earlier, there is an overuse of suicide word on Facebook. I randomly click on the pro or con suicide groups on Facebook, the below three (3) groups showed different characteristics that directly or indirectly encouraging suicides among teenagers.

1) 自殺團(重開) Suicide Group (Re-Open)

Although the admin is not found, but the description of the group might lead to the negative outcomes.

2) 我要自殺(廢物無罪) I want to Suicide (Rubbish Is Not Guilty)

Problem is, reading the posts on the Wall this group tend to build a community resolving around the topic of commit suicide is not a wrong doing.

3) 自殺研究 Suicide Analysis

Facebook users, do you need to analyze why you want / do not want to suicide?

My take is while I don’t believe in social networks are the root of the suicide problems. However, there is an urgency to stop the users from using “自殺”, i.e. suicide when creating the Facebook groups. Social networks suppose to bring people together for a better life rather than to guide them, and eventual lead them to the suicide path.

Lastly, take a look at this Facebook group name, “facebook是我們自殺的終站,” i.e. Facebook is the ultimate way of our suicides.

No, it isn’t.

It looks like quite a number of Facebook groups have been hijacked by a hacker with hijinks in mind? No, the Facebook groups that have been hijacked was under the name of security purpose, with an intention to highlight the apparent flaw in the Facebook group itself.

Searching for “Control Your Info,” users will find some Facebook groups that have been hijacked carried some common characteristics. Firstly, the group’s “Basic Info”, was altered, but the “Contact Info” of the actual creator of the hijacked Facebook group remained as the same. Secondly, the group’s profile picture has been changed to “Control Your Info” logo, as shown in the below picture. If you belonged to that particular hijacked Facebook group, you know this was not the group profile picture it has week(s) ago.

Frankly, it’s still tough to tell what has exactly happened, how the groups have been hijacked other than the statement appeared on the Wall of the Facebook groups that being hijacked, as follows:

Hello, we hereby announce that we have officially hijacked your Facebook group.

This means we control a certain part of the information about you on Facebook. If we wanted we could make you appear in a bad way which could damage your image severly.

For example we could rename your group and call it something very inapp…ropriate and nasty, like “I support pedophile’s rights”. But have no fear – we won’t. We just renamed it Control Your Info. Because this is really all we want:

Think about the safety in your social media life to the same extent you do in your real life. Watch the videoclip for more information or check out www.controlyour.info for more tips soon!

We promise to restore your group name and leave the group by the end of next week. Don’t worry – we won’t mess anything up.

Best regards

/controlyour.info

Apart from this, notice that the name attached to the message was Bella Roregit, or Burstin Woltan.

Additionally, it’s also early to tell the actual number of the Facebook groups that being hijacked. But a possibility of at least 289 groups have been affected, according to the blog of Control Your Info.

On the Control Your Info blog page, it posting, “So, what exactly did we do and how?

We discovered that many groups on Facebook are left without an administrator. All we needed to find these groups was one quick Google search. The search results also revealed many groups that already had been hijacked by various people. Their intentions remain unclear.

So we simply joined 289 open groups and made ourselves administrators. We did not hack anything. Once we were administrators we owned the groups and could have changed any setting. We chose to change the picture, the name and the description of every group. Our intention was and is to restore these groups to their original form and find a suitable admin among the members. To be able to do this, we first backed up all the data we wanted to replace.”

More as this develops, the latest update is that Facebook has denied such a security flaw.

“There has been no hijacking and there is no confidential information at risk,” the company stated. “The groups in question have been abandoned by their previous owners, which means any group member has the option to make themselves an administrator in order to continue communication to the group.”

“Group administrators have no access to private user information and group members can leave a group at any time. For small groups, administrators can simply edit a group name or info, moderate discussion and message group members.”

“The names of large groups cannot be changed nor can anyone message all members. In the rare instances when we find a group has been changed inappropriately, we will disable the group, which is the action we plan for these groups,” Facebook said.

In fact, this is not the first time Facebook has been a target for hijacking. As the world’s top social network, Facebook is still a number one target for whatsoever cybercriminal activities. As such, it’s imperative for the Administrators of Facebook group to continue monitoring the security issues of the group in order to protect the site integrity.

A friend asked me before what one should act when she just join Facebook? My simple answer is that don’t simply add fake Facebook friend to your inner circle as well as join the fake group. Of course, there are many fake profiles that one can’t easily differentiated in Facebook, as I also wrote a post entitled, “Profiting from fake profiles” last month.

But for the fake group, I think I found the answer which I hope I won’t make a mistake. My simple conclusion for a Facebook group is: Good admin is good group. It’s a rare exception where good Facebook group don’t accompany good admin(s), or it’s even a rare exception where a Facebook group don’t have any admin.

Last week, I found that a Facebook group which have no admins. There is a statement appeared on the Group, i.e. There are no admins left in this group! Beware of this kind of groups, that’s because one good admin will not simply build a Facebook group and then leave the group, before she has properly introduced another Facebook member to take over the admin jobs.
